LIT QUIZ COMPETITION 2018
On Monday, 14 May GIS sent two Lit Quiz teams to St Cuthbert's to compete in the Auckland heats of the National Lit Quiz. They competed against approximately 40 teams in the afternoon. Lit Quiz is often called “the sport of reading”; the teams are asked questions in broad categories such as “hair”, “animals”, “fantasy” and “castles” (some of this year’s categories). Each round of questions relates to a category, and come from all types of literature – past and present. Students that take part need to be wide readers as well as having committed to 12 weeks of practice during a lunchtime. Our teams this year didn’t manage a placing, but did well, and Team 1 won one of the rounds with a score of ten out of ten. Team 1: Zenita A., Tom C., Kirsten A., and Emma S. Team 2: Simon Z., Loralei J., Jordyn T., Liam W. & Gabriella R. |

Harbour Zone Cross Country
On Tuesday, 8 August, our students took part in the Harbour Zone Cross Country. All the students did their best and showed real determination. Special mention to Henry Croft who finished 13th in the Year 8 Boys event. Pia Talamdon was also in a strong position in the Year 8 Girls race but unfortunately she damaged her hamstring but still managed to finish the race. |

On the 1 July, Glenfield Intermediate School had two Robotics Team competed in the VEX robotics competition at Glenfield College. This year’s competition sees the students build robots to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by stacking cones on goals, by scoring mobile goals in goal zones, by having the highest stacks, and by parking robots. There were 21 teams in the competition and GIS had the youngest two teams. One of our teams made it into the quarterfinals and finished 5th. We are so proud of them and excited for the next competition after the holidays.

As part of Room 9 and 13’s “Think Big” context both rooms took part in the National First CREST awards. CREST stand for Creativity in Science and Technology. We investigated Scientific topics or found a need and created a prototype/ invention to meet that need. They also had to keep a log book of their journey and present their invention or investigation to the class. In order to pass the award all students had to meet certain criteria. They were encouraged to use mentors. Some projects used innovation to build on others ideas, while others thought of an original idea. As you can see below from the list of some of the projects our students were very innovative and showed creativity and perseverance. They found out that a team project works best if all contribute and that it was important to manage their time. Most importantly they found out that inventing (thinking big) is not easy and there are always next steps and refinements needed to make your investigation or invention better.
