Introduction

At Glenfield Intermediate School we have a comprehensive programme for learning English for those students for whom English is not their first language. The programme has been developed to cover three main stages in second language acquisition.
Those students with minimal English will start in a 'Reception' (beginners) group and have an intensive programme for half the day, five days a week for a term. The focus is on basic interpersonal communication skills called 'oracy'.
The group of students in the 'developing' stages learn English skills while working on curriculum content and focus on reading, writing and speaking. They are withdrawn from their usual class for two or three hours per week.
The students in the 'consolidating' stages are either supported in their own class or withdrawn once a week. The focus is on supporting their academic learning in both English and the other content areas.
The programme is taken by a senior teacher, who is assisted by four language assistants all of who have relevant experience and training in this area of English teaching.
Code of Practice
Glenfield Intermediate School has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available from the school or from the Ministry of Education's website at www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international.
Glenfield - The Centre of the North Shore
The North Shore is very well-resourced with amenities such as leisure centres, swimming pools, libraries, parks and places to enjoy its natural assets such as golfing ranges, boating and sporting clubs. There are large shopping centres with bus networks and ferry services into Auckland City. The North Shore has two major universities and a number of other tertiary education establishments. Many of its secondary schools enjoy excellent reputations.
Within Glenfield itself, there are many amenities of interests for 10 -14 year olds. Many international students use the Glenfield Leisure Centre just five minutes away from Glenfield Intermediate School. It has a well-resourced gymnasium and excellent swimming pool. The Leisure Centre is next door to a large shopping mall with shops and cafes much visited by students.
The Structure of the School Year
The school year is divided into four terms of approximately nine or ten weeks. At the end of each of the first three terms (February until September), there are two weeks holiday. After the last term (October until December), there are final examinations and a long holiday of at least six weeks. Terms and holiday dates vary each year.
The School Day
In each school day there are four blocks. The school day starts at 8.50 am and finishes at 3pm.
At Glenfield Intermediate School, a dedicated professional team of staff are committed to the pastoral care and academic learning of each student. We are very aware of the trust placed in us by parents. Glenfield Intermediate School provides a safe environment and regular communication is maintained with parents and agents.
Glenfield Intermediate School has its own English Language School on site, so if necessary students can improve their own English proficiency in an intensive programme before entering mainstream classes.
Our aim is to give each student the very best programme tailored to their individual needs.
Opportunities Outside the Classroom
In New Zealand there is an emphasis upon a broad education. This includes high quality academic learning as the first priority, with cultural, sporting and social opportunities as other important parts of a school day.
